We are frequently asked our advice about home safety. Just as a
reminder, here is our list of safety tips.
Keep emergency numbers next to the telephone.
Have a fire safety plan.
Install smoke detectors and make sure there is a fire
extinguisher.
Know the fire escape plan.
Never, ever smoke in bed.
Make sure there is adequate lighting.
Always keep:
A lamp near the bed don't get up in the dark.
A night light in the bathroom.
A flashlight handy in case of a power failure.
Hallways and steps well lighted.
Keep pathways clear of furniture, electrical cords, telephone cords,
etc.
Remove throw rugs runners and scatter rugs are often the
cause of falls that may result in broken hips and bones.
Hold onto rails when using stairs. Keep steps free of clutter.
Use rubber mats in the shower. Towel racks must never be used for
grab bars.
Install special grab bars in the tub, shower, and beside the toilet.
Keep kitchen floors free of grease, water, and scraps.
Discard outdated medications.
Keep household pets under control and out of pathways.
