Talk to your family Think
about what you would want to happen if you needed assistance to
live on your own, or if you had to move into a nursing home. Let
your family know your wishes.
Talk about
your aging Tell your children what you notice
about your aging process. Talk about what you remember about your
parents' aging process.
Talk about your health
Make decisions now about living well. Start an exercise
program at whatever level is possible; make adjustments to your
diet, work less, laugh more.
Talk about your retirement
Be proactive about your plans for your retirement.
Create memories during your early years of retirement.
Talk about the unexpected
Develop a plan for unfortunate possibilities: disability,
unexpected death, loss of ability to communicate.
Talk about finances Be
realistic about your assets and be intentional about financial planning.
Talk about your business
Keep a single list of where to find important documents, will, insurance
policies, etc., and let family members know where it is located.
Set up a durable power of attorney, especially a power of attorney
for health care.
Talk about your death Plan
your funeral. Plan where you want to be buried. The more information
you give, the greater the peace of mind of those who want to carry
out your wishes.
Talk about your life Spend
more time with your family talking about your lives together. Spend
less money on "things" and spend more time being with
each other. A peaceful old age is accomplished by feeling good about
how we've spent our time on this earth.
